Twitter Very Basic Skills
After you log in, on your Twitter page, you will see at
the top of your home page, these headings:
Home Notifications #Discover ME
Click on Home. This is where you will see your
followers Tweets. Tweets are the messages people
post on Twitter.
Mentions of you (@yourTwitterName)
To see if people are mentioning you, click on the
"Notification." You will see recent mentions of you. I
would suggest you follow people who mention you.
They are active.
On the Notifications view, you will see Notifications
and Mentions. Notification lets you see who
mentioned you, who recently followed you and if
someone retweeted a Tweet of yours or a Tweet
where you were mentioned.
To mention someone, you type their twitter name
with the @ symbol immediately preceding it.. If you
want to mention me, type "@Poet_Carl_Watts" and
other people or what ever message you want to get
to me. You must leave a space before each person
mentioned and a space following. The first name
mentioned doesn't need a space if no words precede
Using Hash Marks #
Hash marks must have a space before and after the
term being hashmarked. For example #smile is
correct #smile#joke is incorrect. Also hello#smile is
incorrect. Hash marked terms can be searched for as
a group rapidly on Twitter. Twitter also establishes
what topics are "hot" or of great current interest
which creates trends.
Direct Messages, or DMs, are messages that are
private between yourself and the person you're
sending it to. To send a direct message, to someone,
they must be following you.
If they are following you, click on their name. Their
profile will appear, you will see an icon directly to the
right of the follow button. Click on that and you can
send a DM if they are following you.
If you wish to DM me, please @me first as I rarely
check DMs and don't wish to appear to be ignoring
The big trick to getting followers is to follow others!

Another way to get followers: when someone
promotes people to you (mentions your name), follow
them. Usually they are active and many will follow
If you find you're following someone you don't want
to, click on their name. When you see the green
follow button, click on it and it should unfollow.
Click on the offending person's Twitter name. That
will bring up their profile.
There is an icon that is an icon with a "bust" image
(head and shoulders), click on it and pull down to
block. Now they are blocked! I don't hesitate to do
that. See my article "Who Has the Right to Insult
Another point is to put some good content out in your
tweets especially if you want a large number to
continue following you.
Twitter has limits on how many followers you can follow daily. I really can't tell you how many that is and
it appears to be arbitrary.
Once you hit 2001 that you are following, you can expect to be stopped for some period of time from
adding to the number you are following. However, once your followers reach 1800 (I'm assuming based
on my personal experience), you will be able to follow more people. See article TwitTip2001Barrier.
After following people, wait about 3-4 days. Follow back those that are following you. You should be
able to see whose following you and who isn't. Those that aren't following you, unfollow. You should do
this manually a few times just so you know what is happening. (Do not be too aggressive about
following and unfollowing. "Aggressive" behavior is grounds for suspension. "Aggressive" is not defined
by Twitter and is open to interpretation by them.)
Please refer to Twitters rules here: http://help.twitter.com/forums/26257/entries/18311.
You may choose to block people. Do this if they are offensive. I block people that don't post messages
for over a month. They aren't playing the game so why carry the dead.More Basics Please!
I will be adding more as I figure out what to explain. Please let me know if you have anything you have

* URL Shortening.
If you are preparing your tweets in advance, you may want to set up a shortening service that will take
your URL and shrink it down. This allows you to get more text in the message.
I recommend is.dg. Very fast. You simply drag their logo to your book mark bar. When you're on a page,
click and it will shorten it. Or www.ow.ly. On Owly you can enter your URL and the Captcha or login with
Twitter. I recommend logging in. Once logged in, you enter URL and hit "Shrink It" or hit enter on you
keyboard and you get a shortened URL! You can also put their logo on your book mark bar.
When Tweeting a URL, ensure the full http etc is present. That way the link will be live.
http://www.carlwattsartist.com would be live on Twitter. You don't want people to have to copy and
paste to visit page!
Also do not place a character against http..... such as @http://www.carlwattsartist.com. With a character
against the URL it is not live.
"Each RT is more valuable than the last. RT please! #Quote #AwesomeTeam" Carl Watts. The power of
the Internet is the spreading of information. Each RT spreads information, knowledge, further and
further and potentially can circle the globe and change mankind. This is done by a simple RT by you,
helping mankind. In advance, thanks for helping!*
*The use of a hash mark "#" in front of a word is tracking method. It is used to establish trends and
allows a subject to be located easier. Don't over use #s. "A hash tag is similar to other web tags- it helps
add tweets to a category" per Twitter. See full data: http://help.twitter.com/entries/49309-what-are-
