Google give the following definition (there's more but this is enough for this
article): "a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by
their abilities, qualities, or achievements."
I find the derivation of interest: "from re- ‘back’ + specere ‘look at.’" It is kind of
like a second look. Would not failing to give someone a second look be
I also like the song "Respect", it is very up beat!
Respect in Life
I was talking to a young man who had encountered a bully. He had stood up
to him and the bully backed down. The young man said that he was not
giving the guy any respect now.
I gently got him to look at the fact that failing to respect was the exact action
of the bully. I also got him to look at what comes around goes around and
suggested that he respect the man regardless. After all, if he wants respect,
he should give it.
He agreed as he understood.
How to Earn Respect?
What I had mentioned to the young man above is an excellent way to earn
respect. If you give respect, you earn respect.
Bullies may be feared but they are not respected.
Anyone who aids my life has my respect.
Anyone who is around me has my respect. After all, it is my decision to
respect and grant importance to others. Who doesn't have some worth in life?
Perhaps, the criminal, many politicians, and psychs are such a drain to life
they have a negative value to everyone.
The criminal becomes criminal when they lose respect for themselves.
Perhaps a little honest respect, could help them. That would be a case by
case situation where I would have to evaluate are they more immediately
destructive than I'm willing to tolerate?
Relationships are built on trust and communication. If you wish a relationship
to survive, I believe it is wise to respect your partner!
I always give my wife respect. If I disagree with my wife, I communicate to
find out what I don't understand or perhaps what she doesn't understand. By
using respectful communication, agreements are achieved and upsets are
I find I'm respected broadly as I contribute to life and livingness around me. I
pull people up and try never to push them down. I respect others, their
opinions and viewpoints (right or wrong :-)
So give people a second glance of respect and see if things get better in your
relationships in life.
