I often speak in lofty or elegant broad term about grand concepts. I happen to
think that way too!
When it comes to action, some of us do not think we have the power or
resources to do BIG things to help many.
But how about doing some little things?
A Couple Examples
At the post office, I'm opening my mail box and I notice a little old lady
spinning the combination dial. From the number of spins, she must have
been trying to do the first number. However she kept stopping at the same
I realized she did not know how to open the combination lock. I spoke to her
and her English was very poor but that wasn't a barrier.
So I showed her with my box while explaining. Go at least two full turns clock
wise and stop on your first number. She got that.
Then go back one turn counter clockwise past the second number and stop
on the next turn. Then clockwise to the final number.
She mimicked my actions and was able to get her mail.
She was super thankful and happy to have received a little help from a
stranger, me :-)
I went to my car and there were about 20 facial napkins on the ground that
had been use by someone with a cold. I didn't want to touch them.
The alternative was to leave them and let them blow around and litter the
So I grabbed a couple paper towels from my car and picked them all up
including the one that had already blown some distance.
I thought, now what to do with them. No bags in the car. I failed to think of
taking them into Post Office and using their trashcan.
So I got some tape and wrapped the paper towels and the toxic tissues into a
ball and I secured it!
What I did there were two small actions.

I made one person happy. Had I not stepped in to help, she may have left
without the mail. It is my guess that she was picking it up for someone else. A
loss of time and her frustration which would have impacted other people.
In California, she could be a governor's mistress and her upset could have
started a war!
I don't know how you feel about disgusting trash! I can accurately guess, if
you're sane, that it doesn't make you cheerful. More likely, it lowers your
emotional tone if only slightly!
Then you go home and the kids have created a lot of disorder (they always
do) and that's it! You've had it! One too many messy scenes and you lose
control. In your rush to the bar, you have a car wreck and die. There sits
your kids and spouse all because I failed to pick up some trash.
Since I'm letting my imagination run wild. The good thing about me not
picking up the trash is your spouse find the ideal rich replacement for you
who is patient and great with the kids too.
Actually a parent is never replaced. So you are valuable. Therefore, I'll keep
cleaning up after the low life people that throw dirty tissues on the ground!
